"Somewhere there is someone who knows what happened to the two women who disappeared that day and to the two women who disappeared from my neighborhood. This is a real person. He isn't suspected so he can move around freely."
"He loved life and enjoyed it to the fullest. The tragedy is that this warm and loving man is driven to kill."
"By writing in the book that Ted was warm and lovable I was avoiding facing the painful truth that I knew only a small part of Ted. And that small part was rapidly being overtaken by the rageful sexual deviant in him as he repeatedly acted out his murderous fantasies."
Anyone who knows me knows I'm in to true crime. However, this is a case I've recently started learning about. I knew the name and that he was a serial killer, but I didn't know the extent of his evil.
I also couldn't understand how his long time girlfriend had no idea who he was. Until I read this book. I feel the same manipulation she must have felt. The same confusion. The kind where you know, but he makes you question it.
I teared up at the afterward. Reading how Elizabeth was able to grow and heal. And then Molly...ending with her story. It was powerful. I felt the pain as she talked about how she had memories of Ted, but didn't remember loving
him. In her case, I don't know if that would be a blessing or a curse.
This is a must read for anyone who thinks they know this case. It is very eye opening to hear Elizabeth and Molly's stories directly from them.
Molly's closing words are perfect. "And now I go forward with my new mantra: Life is a gift and you still have it. Have the courage to be happy."
